I collect many things, and at the top of the list of things that I hold dear, are these amazing Walter Bosse ashtrays from the 50's. I've been fortunate enough to come into several sets over the years, so I am letting some go!
The design of these ashtrays is simply put, charming; but what I really appreciate was Walter Bosse's integrity to his art. From what I've read, Mr. Bosse was offered a very large sum of money to mass produce these hedgehogs (which were his most popular design by far), but he refused; stating that if they were ever mass produced, they would lose their charm.
Because of the popularity and rarity of these ashtrays, there have been many copies, but I believe the difference is plain as day when comparing to the original! This set is authentic and original. Not only that, this is an early model, which can be discerned by the feet on the smallest hedgehog being actual feet, opposed to later models which adopted an X incised design as an effort to preserve war time metal.
This is really one of the finest I've come across, excellent antique condition, with a nice patina. All 6 pieces are accounted for.
Set measures about 4.5" long, 2.5" high and 2.75" wide
